From January 1988 until her appointment to the bench, Judge Ryu worked in the Civil Division of the California Attorney General’s Office. For most of that time, she was assigned to the Health, Education and Welfare Section of the office, representing state agencies and officials in both trial and appellate litigation in state and federal courts.
Judge Ryu has a longstanding record of service to the Korean and Asian American communities. Judge Ryu was the president of the Korean American Bar Association in 1994 and served as a member of its Board of Governors for over 15 years. She was a founding member and on the boards of both the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles and the Korean American Democratic Committee. In 1999, Attorney General Bill Lockyer appointed her to serve as the Attorney General’s Office’s first-ever liaison to the Korean-American community in California, a position she held until her appointment to the bench.
Since her appointment as a judge to the Los Angeles Superior Court in August 2002 by Governor Gray Davis, Judge Ryu has presided over adult misdemeanor trails, juvenile delinquency matters and felony preliminary hearings. She currently handles felony preliminary hearings at the Compton courthouse.
